It is a variety of the chili pepper species Capsicum frutescens. It is a very pungent pepper, grown mainly in the US and Mexico.The name 'tabasco' is the name of a state in Mexico. The pepper's name came first, and was later taken over by the famous hot sauce. The peppers in pure form are much hotter (30,000 – 50,000 Scoville) than the sauce (2,500 Scoville).
